Spread Art is a “by artists, for artists” grassroots nonprofit organization. Co-Directors Thomas Bell and Christina deRoos are multidisciplinary artists (sound, video, photography, mixed media), curators and event producers.
Spread Art presents multidisciplinary art events in Detroit and beyond. We focus on experimentation and innovation. We support work that pushes creative boundaries, incorporates technology, invites public participation, and/or explores immediately-relevant social themes.
Spread Art’s residency program is based in southwest Detroit. Innovative artists across all artisticmediums are supported with housing, work space, exhibition opportunities, and more. Residenciesvary from one week to two months or longer. Visiting artists are connected with Detroit’s creative community through residency dinners, artist talks, social gatherings, and teaching opportunities foryouth and adults.
Spread Art @detroit contemporary
The Contemporary Art Institute of Detroit (CAID) and Spread Art partnered on a new endeavor to work together in presenting ongoing support for arts and culture programs at the detroit contemporary, a division of CAID. Spread Art will plan and administer all programming at the popular arts venue.
The new program, known as Spread Art @detroit contemporary builds upon the history of successful collaboration between the two organizations, most notably the 2013 North American International Anti-Auto Show in January 2013 which Spread Art curated, and the exhibition of work by NY artist Michelle Matson at Whitdel Arts (a divsion of CAID) in May 2013.
Spread Art @detroit contemporary offers a multi-use, fully outfitted performance, rehearsal, exhibition and creative space with core program components that supports and fosters self-producing artists and artist-run organizations, which are critical to Detroit's vibrant arts community.
